BHCC Meeting 07.19.21 by Mary Bjorklund

Attendees: Mark, Peyton, Ben, Mary, Eric, Ron, Cory, Luke

Pump Fest

-There was a $600 coalition profit from pump fest. We ran out of this years coalition tshirts so we offered to do another order by email. We have received 52 t-shirt orders from all over the country after pump fest for the second tshirt order.

New t-shirt design for next event are designed by Sarah P. There is the BHCC logo on the front with Sarah’s design on the back that shows a hand holding a crystal with a black hills design inside.

Trail Days

–Custer state park trail day will be after the Sturgis rally. The trail day focus will probably be on the base of spire 4 conn route where there is a large tree that needs work.

BHCC is working on lining up a trail day with Mt Rushmore. Working on getting gear incentives for trail workers to attract more volunteers. Possible areas that need work are parking areas by south seas and slang. Suggested that we arrange a date before college kids go back to school at the end of august, so attendance would likely be increased.

Bolt repairs

– Luke has reached out to the Utah climbing groups and found out information on how they do crowd funding to pay route repairers $25 an hour. Access fund helped write the insurance policies but it was difficult. We could piggy back off their ideas for our own bolting committee.

-Group consensus was, for our area, a flat rate per bolt repair would be a good way to pay volunteers.

-We would like to further spread the word of the Bad bolts website. Bad bolts can be reported and a confirmation email will be sent to the BHCC and to the climber who submitted. Possibly posting this link on Mountain Project would get people to have easier access and knowledge to the resource?

-Poster board at beans and biners with list of routes for re-bolting would also be helpful so people can donate to the specific route they want. We need to work on passing the knowledge to more people who are interested in bolt repairing. The committee could take people one on one to train them or hold a clinic to show those who are dedicated and interested.

Misc.

-We plan to do an event where you buy a pint cup and get the first beer fill up free and every one after that discounted. Hopefully could hold this event at The Outdoor Shop in Custer.

-Beans and Biners – Will be held on the Friday or Saturday of labor day weekend. Full pot luck with chili and vegan chili. We are thinking of doing a Chili competition. If you bring chili for the potluck you get entered in a raffle for a prize and everyone can vote on the best chili for an additional prize.

-Reel Rock will hopefully be coming out with another film in the Fall. We plan on doing another showing at the Elk’s theater and Custer beacon like we did this past year.

-New board members – We need new board members to take over by the end of the year. Spread the word to people who would be a good fit. It is a volunteer position, but not very much work and provides good experience and community.

New meeting spot – just to change things up, have a presence in a new place. Open to ideas.

Idea: On the rocks showing. Steve “scruffy” “scruffitudeness” jones talk.
