Spearfish Scramble
Background
The Spearfish Scramble is a 12-hour climbing competition set in Spearfish Canyon. Originally hosted years ago by the Crux Club at Black Hills State University (BHSU), the event is back revived by the BHCC to celebrate our shared love of climbing and competition in Spearfish Canyon. Climbers earn points by sending routes throughout the canyon, then reconvene for prizes, food, beer, and good company. Whether you're in it to compete or just out for a great day on the rock, the Spearfish Scramble has something to offer for every climber.
Description
Climb as many routes as you can clean in 12 hours. That means no falls, no hangs, no take. Points are awarded based on difficulty, and only clean sends count. Each team of two climbers will rack up points individually, and those scores will be added together for your team total.
You and your partner don’t have to climb the same routes, and you can climb at your own pace, in your own style, across any crag in Spearfish Canyon (as long as the grades stay within your chosen division). Got a 5.10 climber and a 5.13 climber on the same team? Are you climbing, but your partner is hurt? Perfect. Track your sends on the paper scorecard provided at registration.
Teams
Teams consist of two people. No solos. You and your partner don’t need to climb at the same level or even climb at that, but you’ll both rack up points individually, and your totals will be combined for your team score. You’re welcome to have a scorekeeper help you track routes and input your sends onto your team’s scorecard, but only teammates can belay each other.
Divisions
Your division is based on your all-time hardest clean redpoint, not what you’re currently projecting. If you’ve ever sent a 5.11a clean, you’re not in the “Over Easy” division anymore. Choose your bracket honestly and compete within your known limit.
Over Easy: up to 5.10d
Sunny Side Up: 5.11a – 5.12a
Hard-Boiled: 5.12b and up
Each team may climb and score a maximum of two routes above their division.
If you climb more than two routes above the chosen division, you will be bumped up a division.
That means:
You can climb below your level, which will help for ‘Most Routes Climbed” but it will not help your “Most points per division”.
Choose your division honestly.
This setup lets everyone push themselves while keeping things fair across the board.
