It was voted that the primary project for 2012 be the Outdoor Climbing Boulder. It was voted in at 9 votes over 1 for the museum. Adam Bergdale was nominated and agreed to be chair of the Boulder project committee and was told there is some interest by Mark Jobman on helping with a grant for this from the Alpine Club. It was felt that all 3 were good ideas so Chris Pelczarski was nominated and agreed to be chair of the museum. Taryn Bergdale was nominated and agreed to be chair of the speakers.

It was voted on and passed that if someone has a project and would like to bring it to the BHCC for review, we can vote to be a foundation for fruition of their ideas. Motion by Daryl Stisser

Voted for top ideas these were the 3 that received votes:
Outdoor climbing boulder (5 votes)
Climbing Museum near sylvan (4 votes)
Host Guest speakers (1 vote)
More discussion to come at the next meeting

Discussion of changes at Wrinkle Rock-new trails, adding to parking, new camping sites, The park recently contacted Ron Yahne about contacting the coalition-he gave the pres and vice pres of the coalition contact info to him through the coalition email.

The park is concerned with parking at the top of the ridge that drops into middle earth. They discourage parking there.

Next month:
Proposal to add a historian: Role to keep old hardware, old registries, store old documents, old photos. If there was a museum they would be a back bone to the museum. The proposal is for removing a member at large and replacing with a historian. There was much discussion about it being a great idea. Concerns were changing the backbone of our structure by removing a member at large so suggestions were to just have a historian but not a board member. Another concern was unless we had a museum to keep the things in would there be the potential that one individual could misplace or move and take them with them. No decisions were made just discussion at this meeting. Plan is to discuss at the board meeting and bring to the next meeting.

Nov to nominate officers:
Nominations will be taken in person verbally at the meeting, off the website, by email, or by telling a board member your nomination.
November 16th at midnight is the deadline. Absolutely no additions after this.
We will have a board meeting to layout who and how we can vote.

Dec meeting to collect dues, maybe have at the Athletic Club, climb and new holds and have a social – Chris Pel to look into this.

repaired. Eric went into discussion on an Agreement that was made in 1988 when Rushmore was
getting developed. It was being established as a safe fun climbing area. At that time a lot was discussed
and the community consensus was retro bolting was allowed to keep up with the statements that
were in climbing magazine back then that stated this was a well protected, fun climbing area. Eric
commented on the fact that working with the land managers to allow permits for power drilling for
repairs was a role model for the country. The permits and the Agreement were huge and the first of
their kind in the US. He commented that we are extremely lucky to have so many diverse areas and
diverse climbers, it is wonderful that there are areas for each personal tastes here, and reminded us

to remember others wants and needs as well as your own and treat others as you would want to be
treated.

Burr Slideshow?

Discussion of replacing bolt for bolt Yellow Wall all 3 pitches. Discussion it would take about 30 bolts
and we currently have about 60 on hand. This will last us the rest of the year and next year we can
purchase 100 for about $700. There were donations at a Burr slide show a number of years ago to have
this done. All 5 present board members voted and unanimously passed to have it repaired.

Next meeting 8/17/11.

Black Hills Climbing Coalition
Board Meeting 5/11/11
Sanfords Pub 6:00p
Rapid City, SD

Attendees: Daryl Stisser, Jason McNabb, Ron Yahne, Chris Pelczarski, Becky Wagner, Mike Cronin, Rich Barry,  Jim Slichter

Presentation to the board:
Eric Sutton presented a process to the board that allows members to present a proposal to the board. His points were that this would allow another way members could communicate other than email to the board because email is not personal. He recommend that a certain amount of time is given to a member to present to the board and that they present orally and in written form. He suggested only one or two people at a time and that they can speak for a group, but no large groups of people to present. This is a way to keep people happy having two options: email or proposal to the board. The board would get back to the presenter in a timely fashion. Eric then left the meeting and allowed private discussion from the board members.

Terms of Approval for the proposal of member communication with the board:
It was then proposed and passed (6-1) that a trial basis of a 5 minute time limit (more time allowed if board members have questions) for any member (no groups) to present a written and oral proposal of any kind to the board prior to the regular meetings would be allowed providing a written proposal was submitted to the president at least 1 week prior to the monthly meeting. The board would not need to comment at the time of presentation, but would get back to the presenter in a timely fashion.
----------------
Discussion of a possible Sacred Route List for retro bolting. It was discussed for and against this with the following reasons listed.
For a Sacred Route List:
1. May help alleviate fears of some of the climbing community.
2. It would be interesting to know what routes others wanted on the list.
Against a Sacred Route List:
1. It would be difficult to set up a fair process of how a route qualifies to be on the banned list, and concerns of backlash if certain members didn’t get their personal classics approved.
2. The current system we have requires permission of the FA if possible and allows all of the climbing community to comment and any route considered sacred by many would bring forth numerous comments which would be considered by the repair committee with the utmost importance to do what is best for the majority of the community. This allows for a sensible self governing community.
It was voted on by the board for starting a Sacred Route List: It was defeated (5-2), in favor of our current system only.
------------------
It was discussed, moved and passed (7-0) that only the 7 board members (chair, co-chair, treasurer, secretary, publicist, and the two members at large) can vote on retro bolting after the community has had time to comment. This allows for an odd number and keeps the repair committee workers (gate keeper, leads and committee members) as workers only.
-------------------
It was found that we are current as a non profit with the State of South Dakota, however we do not have non profit status with the Federal Government. Jason is to look into this. Our main goal is we want liability and it seems we have it with the state but we do climb on federal lands too so we need to double check.

-------------------

Mike commented that the Access Fund is working to create a program where all members pay a little higher membership fee at their current coalition and then get a membership to the access fund too and get their support too. This is just in the works, more info later.

It was moved and passed to adjourn.

Black Hills Climbing Coalition Meeting Minutes

1/19/11

School of Mines

Attendees: Rich Barry, Tyler Bargwardt, Chris Pelczarski, Jim Slichter, Jerry Wingenter, Chris Spellmeyer,
Denise Hardesty, Chuck Mordhorst, Snake Ferguson, Chris Hirsch, Becky Wagner, Ron Yahne, Jason
McNabb, Anthony Schwartz, Katie Graue, Chris Dale, Zachary Hewitt

Introduction of Officers and then all attending members

Review of last meetings notes

New Business:

Ron bought a new 36V hammerdrill that was just under $500

Discussion of reasons to join the coalition: Money Raised goes to replace old hardware and keep our
resources in good repair and to be as safe as possible for all to enjoy, to have a voice for all climbers
with issues involving the land managers and the ability to have a contact for landmanagers to make
decisions on climbing areas and to lobby to keep our climbing freedoms, 10% Discount at Granite Sports
in Hill City, discounts on events sponsored by the coalition, a way to meet other climbers

Treasure: We have received an additional $120 from membership fees over last months and also an
additional $80 in some informational paper work Bruce Junek had given to Chris Pelczarski from quite a
while ago. In Dec we had 1432.41 in the savings and 734.81 in the checking.

Website overview: Thanks Daryl for taking this on and getting on it!! Check out the new website with
more to come!! We also have communications with climbers through facebook!

Announcement of Busse’s Guidebook is July 15th. Burr and Busse are still looking for historic photos-no
top rope photos. It would be good to possibly be able to combine a book release party and a Burr slide
show and fundraiser. To contact Burr with photos.

Bolting/Route Repair Committee: One of the functions of the coalition is to do route repair, primarily
in Custer and Rushmore. Goal is to identify routes that have unsafe hardware. A number of years ago
the coalition revamped their system to all stainless steel that are all powder coated. Jason got Black
Hills Powder Coat to help get the hardware powder coated. Coming soon is the protocol for repair and

retro bolting and what is required for the coalition to perform these tasks. The members at large and
others from the coalition worked with land managers (intern superintendent) at rushmore to discuss
the area they wanted closed after the incident of Green Peace placing a banner over Mt Rushmore.
Land Managers proposed to close most of emancipation. Coalition members lobbied and came to a
compromise of not scrambling off the back of emancipation but kept most climbs open. This included
Garfield Goes to Washington, a very popular climb. Please report climbs in need of repair to the route
repair committee. There was an overview of the recent past years repaired routes and the ones to be
reviewed next. This should be on the website soon.

Athletic Club Bouldering Comp: To be a fundraiser, possible discount for BHCC members at the Athletic
Club. Suggested 1st weekend of Feb but possibly the 2nd weekend (Sat) in Feb.

Suggested a hold making party at Jims: Should be able to make 70 holds with 2 people in one hour.
Cost of 500 holds would be about $200.

Any questions or suggestions please contact Chris Pelczarski

Jim Suggested at the next meeting that we discuss: Dates of Pin Fest and Beans and Biners, and a work
day to publicize the dates early!

Next meeting Feb 16th – place is still open

Becky Wagner moved to adjourn and Jason 2nd – meeting adjourned.

Social at Patty’s to follow-open to all.Black Hills Climbing Coalition Meeting Minutes

Darrel brought up membership dues:
Discussion revealed Motion to raise dues to $20 per person.
An individual under the age of 18 can get the benefits of being a member if at least one
parent is a paid member. This benefit is for children only, not spouses or significant
others over the age of 18. The benefits include discounts on events etc that members
normally get. If someone under the age of 18 does not have one paid parent then they
can become a member by paying the membership dues. This was voted and passed.
Dues are now $20 per person with kids under the age of 18 of paid members free.

Next meeting check ropes and we will have Chris Pelczarski come up with a proposal to
replace and get new ropes.

We are a non profit but we need to look into if we have kept up on maintaining to see if
we still have this status. (Later research showed that the BHCC no longer has has any status as a nonprofit)

Motion for meeting to be adjourned by Jim, Becky 2nd. Meeting adjourned.

Black Hills Climbing Coalition Meeting

Meeting Minutes from 10/29/09 held at 7pm at Dublin Square in Rapid City.

Attendees: Caleb Hansen, Rebecca Wold, Jay Erickson, Ron Williams, Ron Yahne, Becky Wagner,
Jason McNabb and Adrienne Lindholm

Discussion of the New Wrinkle Rock Climbing Area Improvement Projects. Ron Yahne attended the meeting
with the Forest Service (FS) and National Park Service (NPS). Good discussion was held and as far as Ron
was concerned most of it was great for climbers. The plan is to expand the parking area to 20 spaces. They
had suggested adding 4 camping pads which Ron agreed would be great. They suggested along the trail by
the road and Ron suggested on the left side of the trail and closer to the parking area. They also wanted to
decrease erosion by placing belay pads at the base of Toy Boat and # 9 and close the trail that has washed
by #9 and have the trail by Toy Boat as access to these climbs. It was also discussed to change the drainage
by the Wrinkle Rock entrance so it would not drain onto the trail and change the drainage by Dykes Next Door.
Back fill would be applied and the drainage changed to help decrease erosion in these areas. Concerns
that Ron found were they planned to remove the parking along they Hwy but by removing this and adding a
few more spaces in Wrinkle Rock we will still have a net decrease in parking spaces. They wanted to close
the parking on the Hwy for people crossing the Hwy at this spot, however Ron commented that people would
cross from the parking lot behind the bathroom to the North Park/Chopping Block area. Behind the bathroom
is a blind corner and likely more of a safety concern for foot traffic in this area. Ron said they had not realized
this and made notes of this. It was discussed and not passed to comment on dogs in the area. Concerns that
were discussed and agreed upon by the coalition meeting (motion by Rebecca to send an email or letter in
response to the previous meeting that Ron attended 2nd by Ron with unanimous vote to proceed with the letter)
included.
1. Overall BHCC is excited about the changes at Wrinkle Rock with few concerns to consider.
2. Parking lot –excellent but concerns of net decrease in parking if hwy is closed.
3. Concerns of crossing to North Park/Chopping block by the bathroom and having a more dangerous spot
crossing the hwy
4. Tent pads are great however not near the hwy keep them back closer to the parking area and on the far
side of the trail away from the hwy.
5. Great to stop erosion by closing the one eroding trail by #9 (there will still be access from a different trail)
and placing belay pads
6. Great to change drainage near parking area trailhead and Dykes Next Door
7. Concerns of keeping maintenance of the Wrinkle Rock bathroom open. If it is not maintained where would
you expect people to use the bathroom? Additionally when most climbers have been in the parking area, it is
very common (almost daily when we are there) there are non climbers stopping to use the area and its facilities.
High use area and concerns of not maintaining this bathroom especially so close to Mt Rushmore may leave a
negative impression on many visitors.
8. On pg 7 of 8 Under Other Management Issues there is some confusion on the statement of the use of
non-motorized and motorized drilling. If there could be some clarification that would be great. We believe
non-motorized drilling is allowed in most areas. Clarification of this is needed to ensure correct usage by the
BHCC.

Ron Yahne is in charge of developing a letter to send and is the contact person from the BHCC on this topic.

The trail from Wrinkle Rock parking to the kiosk is going to be handicap accessible and
Dr. Rebecca Wold an occupational therapist is offering to give free consultations.

Rebecca is going to ask Tony from Turkey Graphics about some ideas for T-shirt logos.

Discussion of a Holiday event was discussed and determined that Caleb would look into a pot luck with beer
and possible video at the Athletic Center for Dec or Jan

Discussion of getting more info about upcoming events and past events on the website. Jason will email a list
of repaired routes to Eric to put on the website. Recent repairs are Dire Spire – new bolts and anchors, Ocean
Spray on Tiki – new bolts, and Existantial Angst – new anchors.

It was moved by Becky to adjourn and second by Rebecca. Meeting Adjourned.

must sign a waiver first. Jason made a motion to use liability waivers. You do not have to be a member to climb
but you need to sign a waiver at each event. There is to be a central waiver signing spot and some other signs
posted to let people know to sign a waiver prior to using coalition ropes. Seconded by Rebecca. Rebecca Wold

advertisement for our events but also current updates the morning of events on weather and such.

Keenan Harvey photography class has been cancelled.

Treasurer's Report: Savings;$1360 Checking: $2557

Daryl with an insurance update: Since we are a professional organization Daryl suggests we get insurance even
for our gathering events with no comps. Cost estimate would be $2000 per year. This brought up a lot of
discussion on whether or not it is necessary and ideas of getting legal advise if it is necessary or what the
consequences of not having insurance. Joel said he would see what he could find out from his wife an attorney.
Other ideas were possibly seeing if we could join with Tech for these events and have insurance through them.
It was also proposed that we have a festival in town during the weekend we climb so maybe we can get some
city insurance. Ideas for generating more $ for insurance is increasing membership dues, making event dues
mandatory, having more auctions at our events, and asking for donations at our events.

Pin Fest 3rd week of July: Trees are down everywhere!! Too many so Custer should move them but we should
find out a time line for removal. Scott Malone is the contact person. 10 Pins area is a mess and hard to get to
any climbs contact Lindsey Barneys boss's boss would be the best person to contact.

The contact person for discussion on Wrinkle Rock Parking Lot was supposed to speak tonight but is absent-hopefully

They are open for comment until May 4th-please send a letter to voice how it will affect climbing in the VC. Mike gave a hand out of a letter to use as a reference and another hand out on where to send your comments and information you may want to add to your letter. For more info please contact Mike.

Old Business:

Treasurers Report: Jim is not present to give an updated report.

Website update: Eric has had trouble with the website and getting new software. He will look into contacting Brett who may have knowledge to help us get this in order.

Daryl is not present to give us an update on insurance for an outdoor comp.

Will Busse was voted to be in charge of looking into cleaning up trails in the Ten Pins and Cathedral Spires areas. Rochelle is to co-chair this project. We will ask Bruce to talk with the park system about how to help. If Bruce (not present) doesn’t want to do this Ron Yahne said he would.

Melissa Hampton ( mjhampton@hotmail.com )said she would help with a climbing fest and chili feed. Shannon Toowmy sp? Stated in the past he would help too. Will Buckman said he would like to have a 3 hour work day at the Tower and then food and then climbing the 3rd week in Sept. We may be able to group all of these together at that time.

It was brought up that the bolting committee and our co-chair has had a difficult time with communication with Rich, the head of the bolting committee. Multiple emails by the bolting committee and 2 phone calls from Caleb have not been returned. Bolting committee members stated that Rich does a great job and they would like to keep him in charge, however a more timely return of communication and more timely way of getting gear is needed.

Mike Cronin brought up that he would like to bring a proposal to the next meeting about the groups thoughts for rap bolting with power drills and talking with the park system about a permit for doing so in the Custer State Park area. This brought up much heated discussion both for and against such a project. Discussion included illegal bolting that may be occurring, how a permit system my help and how this could increase the number of routes in this area and they could be regulated about what route get put in. Discussion for tradition and how doing this would be more of a burden on the park system and rangers. It was stated that rap bolting is legal at this time but power drilling is not. A motion was made by Caleb to allow Mike to bring a proposal to the next meeting and seconded by Toni. Many members stated comment for and against the acceptance of a proposal. This discussion caused much upheaval amongst members.

Becky moved to adjourn and it was second by Lance.

Note: an email was sent to the member list on 3-26-09 by Mike Cronin stating the with-drawl of his proposal due to the disturbance amongst members about the subject of power drills in the State Park.

Repair Kits: Recommended by the coalition for the repair committee to have the kits ready for use by April 1st .
The repair committee needs input for repair routes. An attempt to ask at every meeting for any routes in need of
repair will be put on the agenda for upcoming meetings.

Voting Recap of new board members

New Business:

Recommended a motion to add the Access Fund Representative (Daryl) and Membership Tracker/Promoter
(Cheryl) to be added to the board. Discussion involved a low attendance at the meetings and very few available
voters due to board members not always being able to vote. It was decided by a vote to just keep them as
current positions but not as official “board members”.

Treasurer Report: Jim: $1356 in savings and $2482 in checking.

Daryl had sent an email for proposed changes to Mt Rushmore – contact Daryl or Wyss Associates

VC road closing: Mike has gotten support from some companies such as Black Diamond and Sportiva for
help with promoting keeping the access road open. Steve sits on the board for the off road riders program
and will pass the info on to them, maybe we can gets some added support from them . They will have a proposal
for the closing on the 27th. Comments can be given after that time. Please contact Mike Cronin for more info.

Website: Eric has been having issues with accessing our current website. It has been voted on in the past that
Eric is oked to get new software because of the difficulties with the current website. Bret said he had access to
new software so him and Eric will work out the best solution.

Daryl is to comment on how we can get insurance for an outside comp.

Brainstormed for goals for 2009:
1. Educational Day: Self Rescue and Anchor Building
2. More regular climbing events: Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon
3. Chili Feed
4. Trail Projects
5. Horseshoe Hell: 12 hours of climbing for a fundraiser
6. Tree removal around the Ten Pins

Becky made a motion to start committees next month for goals we want to accomplish. All would be great but if
only some get organized, maybe the others will get done next year. Sue 2nd the motion. It passed by unanimous vote.

Benefits of membership: Involvement with the above goals, route repair, 15% off at Granite sports(just tell them
you are a member), voice for the climbing community

Next months meeting is proposed for Spearfish and is TBA, (likely Crow Creek
Brewry or Sandfords)

Steve had a motion to adjourn the meeting and it was 2nd by Rebecca.

Attendees: Jim, Eric Hansen, Susan, Chris, Caleb, Duane, Rich, Rebekah, Roger, Bruce, Brent, Mike, Shannon,
Jason McNabb, Ron Yahne, Aaron, Jason Lembert, Gwen, Lisa, and Becky

Old Business: Bolting Committee met, discussed and it is the consensus of the group to see how “kits” with a set
amount of gear determined by the bolting committee will work for each of the bolting committee members of each
region of the repair areas. The routes in need of repair will be determined by the bolting committee group prior to
the repair season. The kits will be replenished on return of accurate paperwork of where each piece of hardware
was placed. It was the consensus of the group that paperwork is important for good relations with the landmanagers.
The kits are on a trial basis and if found to not work smoothly another solution will be suggested.

Bolting Update from Rich: Priority finding routes in need of repair, Goals: Accountability, Quality work and
Partnership with landmanagers.
Time table:
Establish list of routes at beginning of each year and prioritize them
Have an area lead person for each area: Rushmore and Custer
Late winter give hardware estimates needed for each kit
Hardware is approved through Bruce and Jim
Select route repair lists for each area
Process Hardware
Give a refresher training course for installing hardware
Perform route repairs through out the season
To replenish kit-need forms properly filled out with route info and accountability for each piece of hardware used
End of year final report
Discussion and proposal by Rich on Retrobolting:
Concerns with adding bolts to routes, Parks mandate preservation so there is some potential for controversy
and poor relations with the Parks, However Todd (our current contact with the park) has stated he is in favor of
adding bolts if it decreases risk of harm to participants.
Rich proposed 2 options for retrobolting:
Option 1: If there is bolting the same day as the recon 3 people on the bolting committee should be there to agree
on the retrobolting. If the recon is done one day and drilling occurs another day it is only necessary to have 2 bolting
committee members input.
Option 2: Recon then post on website for comment
It was voted on and Option 1 Passed by majority vote.
Rich provided Repair Route lists for Custer and Rushmore areas. See Becky or Rich for the lists.

Cheryl has been keeping a database of members and has been doing a great job of adding the new members to
the email database

Donations: Philip Berggren made a $50 donation. Becky will send a thank-you to him and Mike Engel from last
year he donated $500.
Treasurer’s report: Year End: Checking: 2052.26 Savings:1355.17. Since then, The Andy Burr slide show netted
an additional $430

Pat Wyss would be a good contact for anyone interested in more information on the Mickelson/Rushmore Trial
Project-see Susan for details

Mike Cronin commented again on access to the VC. It would be landlocked if they close rd 150 off Sheridan Lake Rd.
There has been a proposal for closure then 45 days waiting period. We need to let them know why access through this
road is so important. Mike will get info on key points to Becky so she can email info for all members to send info to rally
why we need it left open.

Voted that the next meeting be held in Rapid City at Dublin square on WED. Feb 18th. Caleb will make sure all is ok
with Dublin Square.
Mike Cronin is working on a meeting in Spearfish in March. TBA

It was voted and passed that we charge $10 for the Peter Lev slide show on January 31st at School of Mines Campus
EP Bld Rm 252 (New Location) and anyone interested gets a free membership for 2009 to the BHCC.

Black Hills Climbing Coalition

Meeting 12/16/08

Attendees: Cheryl, Daryl, Kaleb, Eric, Will, Brent, Jeff, Mike, Jim, Shannon, Bruce and Becky

Old Business:

Bolting Committee: Becky proposed a recommendation from the general coalition to the bolting committee about having "bolting kits" for the bolting committee members. It is proposed that the bolting committee members meet to decide if this sounds like a good idea and what exactly will be in each kit. Documentation of each piece of hardware etc. and an accurate list of routes repaired would be required prior to any replenishment of kit items. This will hopefully allow for more flexibility in making repairs for the ultimate goal of getting more repairs accomplished. It was seconded by Daryl and was voted on and passed. We ask that the bolting committee meet and report their decision back to the general coalition meeting. Brent also suggested an online submission of all repair work done.

Boulder Comps: One is set for Jan 10th at the Athletic Center. Mike suggested we ask to see if the proceeds from it could go to purchase new holds at the gym. Daryl is to look into this further.

New Business:

Audit Committee: Roger, Brian, and Jim met for an internal audit of the books. There were receipts for almost everything with the exception of some speakers. It was reminded that receipts were needed for everything. It was stated that all incoming money needs to have a checks and balance. 2 separate people are to count the money and check the deposit. Brent asked the tax status-Non profit. Check book balance is at $1647.00 and the savings account has around $2000.00 and exact amount was not known at the meeting.

Nominees for 2009 Board members to be voted on next month.

Chair: Elect one
Brent - thoughts for improvements next year: possibly less meetings-one yearly, having projects laid out-example trail project could form this on the website and use it as a communication tool.

Bruce Junek - Get a good publicist, get the website up and running, brainstorm on new members and be crazier and try meetings in different towns in the Black Hills.

Co-Chair: Elect one
Lyle, Kaleb Hansen, Will Busse
Secretary: Becky Wagner

Treasurer: Jim Schlicter

Publicist: Eric Hansen Need to update the website and get it running again. Need to post new information in a timely manner and check and respond to emails. Chair will email newsletter to publicist and then publicist will get it on the website. Forrest Balk volunteered to help revamp the website. Eric will contact him.

Members at Large: Elect 2: Ron Yahne, Peter Lev, Mike Cronin

It has been proposed that a new position be opened and voted on next month. We have had difficulties lately with having a current list of members. It was proposed to have a membership director with the job description of keeping a current list of members and being a promoter of new membership. Nominee: Cheryl

Access Fund Representative: Daryl Stisser has agreed to be the representative from the Black Hills Climbing Coalition.

New Trails in the Hills
Mickelson/Rushmore trail. Daryl reported about the meeting in Keystone. This is in regards to a proposed trail from the Mickelson trail to Mt. Rushmore. Discussion about what issues will arise and if it is possible to do this. There are some issues with a few land owners in order to make this possible. Also one of the proposed routes goes up the old road through the South Seas and Wrinkle rock parking lot. The trail system may consist of 12-18 miles of new trail in the Rushmore area. This could have a large impact on climber's parking and free camping at Wrinkle rock. It may be in the coalitions best interest to voice our opinion on the situation.

Potential Road Closure:
Mike Cronin brought to our attention that there is a proposed road closure though the off road travel management plan. They will be seasonal and some permanent closures of roads. The road of concern for climbers is Rd 150 off Sheridan Lake Road. You turn right after mile marker 7 on Norseman and then branch off onto 151E. This is the main public access to the VC climbing area. This may cause a land lock of the climbing area. Mike is asking for climbers to write letters to the Forest Service about key things of this is a climbing area close to Rapid and can disperse recreation to take some of the pressure off of Spearfish Canyon. The VC has had bolted routes Mike plans to hand out a letter asking for letters of support and where to send them at the Andy Burr Slide show on Dec 30th.

Having the Coalition Meetings in Different Places:
There was a motion to have meetings in different places.
Jan meeting 3rd tues at the Gaslight at 7.
Might look into meeting in Hill City in Feb. and possibly at Common Grounds in Spearfish in March. It was suggested to add a carpooling place on our website.
December Slide Show:
Andy Burr Slide show scheduled for Dec. 30th at 7 pm at Dublin Square. Minors allowed until 9 pm. It was decided cost is $10 and there will be free membership to the coalition included. Becky will make a form for attendees to fill out with their name, email and phone number. All dues start in Jan of 2009. It was moved and passed that dues start at the first of the year. This will allow us to start a current member list. Brent will look into getting items donated for auction for fund raisers.

January Slide Show:
Tentative January 31st slide show by Peter Lev. Not sure where it will be yet.

Brent suggested that we make membership cards to present at places such as Granite Sports, etc.

Items to be discussed at the January Meeting:

Vote for new board members.
Daryl will comment on how we could get insurance for an outdoor comp.
Discuss the goals of the coalition and the benefits of membership.

11/18/08

Meeting at the Gas Light

Attendees: Ron Yahne, Chris Spellmeyer, Becky

Tour of the Hall of Records has been canceled due to snow until further notice.

Discussion of bolting committee. The current protocol is not working well. There is frustration in lack of a timely response from approval and receiving of hardware for the people doing repairs. It has been proposed again to have “kits” for each person on the bolting committee, that get replaced only when good records of where the current kit hardware was used. It was mentioned that it would be good to always recon the entire route but if there are bad anchors, they can be replaced without repairing the entire route due to safety issues with bad anchors.

Darryl is back and may organize some bouldering comps.

Granite Sports is willing to take money for people who would like to become members for us. Members get a 15% discount there. This may help to increase our membership.

Becky said if she could get a list of current members she would be willing to try and keep up with current email addresses. Becky had talked with Forrest Balk and he said he would be willing to revamp our WEB page over Christmas holiday. Becky needs to find out from Aaron how to get be able to change things on our web site.

Climbing Coalition Meeting

Minutes for the 10/21/08 meeting

Attendees: Ron Yahne, Rick, Chris, Brent, Aisling, Eric, Jim, Will, Carrissa, Pete, Ron Williams, Jason Lambert and Becky

Old Business:

Holiday Hike to the Hall of Records - tours are shut down due to a liability issue, someone fell and broke their ankle so they have shut down tours but Todd said he would work on seeing if they would let us. Ron is working with Todd.

The slide show with Dawn Glanc: it was short notice and she was not interested at this time.

Peter is still willing to do a slide show this fall.

Andy Burr is willing to do a slide show this fall also.

New Business:

Brent comments:
Vern Phinney is working on a new guidebook. There have been comments in the past about they layout being confusing so he will try to remedy that. Brent is helping Vern - they are looking at the entire Rushmore area from Raspberry to Horse Thief. Vern wanted a self publish and to do it in black and white. Andy Burr however will not support photos in a black and white book. Brent and crew are looking into a grant with S.D. Tourism and using (Fred Nightly?) at Sharp End Books. Sharp does the marketing and pays for the publishing up front. It would be a 3-stage process with a goal for the first book out in 1 year containing East Harney Range, 2nd volume-West Harney and 3rd volume bouldering in Harney. They will be looking for proofreaders and editors. Please contact Brent or Vern for more info.

Rick discussed Primal Quest 2009.
Rick is on the Rapid City Sports Board of Directors and came to inform us of Primal Quest 2009. It is a 10 day human powered backcountry adventure race. It is Aug.15-24th 2009 and to be hosted in the Rapid City area. They consist of co-ed teams of 4 people. All members have to compete in all components. It will consist of categories of trekking, climbing, swimming, spelunking, biking etc. Nov 1st is the opening of registration. They have a goal of 75-100 teams from all over the world, cost of entry is $11,500. It is expected to bring a million direct spent to the area with 2 million in free advertising for S.D. Rick is asking the coalition to support the event through entries, volunteers and ideas for routes for the event. They are looking for about 4 routes around the 5.7 grade, possibly some side by side routes. These will all be done with a fixed rope. They have used slings in the past-usually no new bolting - if there is they would remove and cover well. Please bring ideas to Rick at 381-5372 or email him at emersric@rapidnet.com Media ideas to go to Emily Currey at 605-773-3301 or email at emily.currey@state.sd.us For more information of Primal Quest see their web site at www.ecoprimalquest.com

Chris said that Darryl was willing to have a bouldering comp in early Nov. but he will be out of town until right before then so looking for someone to advertise. No takers at this time.

Climbing Coalition Meeting

Minutes from the meeting on 8/20/08 at The Gas Light 7pm

People present at the meeting.
Jim, Ron, Susan, Peter, Roger, Darrell, Shawn and Becky

Old Business

Jim gave a treasurers report:
Paul Piana slide show net $455 plus a $500 donation from Mike Engel. This did include everyone’s membership dues. Roughly 50 members signed up. Leaving a rough balance in the acct of $2300. Paul charged $500 and the Elks charged $250.

In was mentioned that in the past we had people renew their memberships at pumpfest and that we seemed to have a better turn out. It was mentioned to note this for next year.

New Business

A suggested event for Oct. was a Dawn Glance movie or slide show, her request was $500 and travel expenses. The question was raised to see how much travel expenses would be and if she would take $500 total? Ron was to look into it.
Peter also offered to do a slide show for the cost of a hotel room at the Alex Johnson and supper.
Another idea was to see if the Firehouse or the climbing club at Tech would sponsor a place for a slide show. Contact Mike Kegan at Tech. We will ask Bruce (not present) to look into this.

Ron wants to add Raisins in the Sun to the bolting list, a new bolt at the traverse at least. Ron had spoken to Mike and Mike had commented he was impressed with their work and was willing to have Raisins retrobolted. This was Oked by the members present at the meeting.

Ron has requested more drill bits. It was Oked by the present members to get him some more.

Other routes in need of repair:
Gold Line
Left most route on Queen Pin-1st bolt is bad above the shelf

It was brought up for discussion that the people on the bolting committee have a kit with enough equipment for repairing more than one route at a time. Each bolting committee member would have to turn in their repair lists to account for the items used in order to get a replacement kit. This was a suggestion to decrease the time it takes to rebolt and repair routes. It seems that time of qualified repairers is difficult to find and that repairs are in need, so a proposal of all bolting committee members getting a kit to expediate the process and that they were allowed to repair anything as they feel fit as long as it is on the “Approved Route Repair List”. It was unanimous that good records of what was repaired and what equipment was used is of high importance. The bolting committee is to discuss this and report at the next meeting.

Beans and Biners
Set for Aug 30th – Pot Luck at Rushmore

The coalition will furnish chili or burritos (Jim will bring burritos if he can attend-he will contact Becky within the week to let her know. If not Shawn may be able to make chili. If not Becky can make something. Darrell offered to donate some buffalo meat and Becky offered to donate some beef. We usually make for 40-50 people.)

*Need Bruce to send out an email notice about it being a pot luck
*Need Bruce to get flyers up ASAP. Gus has done the flyers in the past?
*Tables Becky can bring 3 card tables. If more are needed Bruce should be contacted to bring some.
*Bruce alert Forest Service and get a permit?

Meeting Adjourned.

advertisement for our events but also current updates the morning of events on weather and such.

Jason Mc Nabb and Mike Cronin attended the Travel Management Plan meeting last week about the different proposals for the trails systems.

Black Hills Climbing Coalition

1/21/09 Gas Light –Rockerville

New Business:

Each nominee for office had a chance to speak on their behalf.

Nominees are:

Chair: Bruce Junek and Brent Kertzman

Discuss the goals of the coalition and the benefits of membership.

...........................................................................................................................................................................................................

*Need Bruce to send out an email notice about it being a pot luck
*Need Bruce to get flyers up ASAP. Gus has done the flyers in the past?

You do not have to be a member to climb

posted to let people know to sign a waiver prior to using coalition ropes.

New Business:

Each nominee for office had a chance to speak on their behalf.
