Black Hills Climbing Coalition Minutes April 18, 2006 @ The Gaslight
Present: Bruce Junek, Susan Scheirbeck, Ron Williams, Allan Ange, Laura Watson, Pat Harris, Brent Kertzman, Gus Malon, Daryl Stisser, Ron Yahne, Roger Arnold, Duane Martenson, Jim Schlichter
Bruce reported on the Mt. Rushmore meeting. Bruce, Brent Kurtzman, Mike Cronin, and Duane Martenson met with Todd Van Alstyne and Don Hart. They would like a list of work done over the years; they appreciate climbers using the climber registries; are open to helping us achieve goals regarding trail work; recognize that we are a legitimate user group. We need to encourage climber registration more within BHCC- it helps us.
Action: Bruce will get the list of work done over the years to them.
Gus mentioned that the Forest Service Superintendent would like to do more with trail work. They are working on a master, 10 year plan. Picnic areas in particular are being looked at to increase usage. Breezy Point may be able to be reevaluated. The climbing board at Wrinkled Rock could be duplicated at other parking areas.
Action: Gus will keep us informed.
Granite Sports/Jim Peterson reported Hill City Chamber wants team of climbers for fundraiser for cancer.
Action: not determined.
Devils Tower will be having a July 4 Climbing Reinactment. They would like BHCC to provide climbers to summit and raise the flag. They plan on having a big day long celebration plus fireworks and evening presenters including Todd Skinner, the Conns, and William Ripley’s grandson, among others.
Action: Bruce will reserve some campsites. Call or email Bruce if you want a site saved.
Pumpfest: Daryl Stisser/Sylvan Rocks will underwrite the Pumpfest insurance.
Committee: Lyle Clapp, Rich Berry, Brent, Bruce, Susan, Ron, will communicate prior to the next meeting with a Pumpfest outline.
Proposed dates: Saturday, July 22 was suggested as the date with Sunday as a backup OR looking at tying it to the Tower event.
Action: Bruce will draw up a letter to send to old Devils Tower climbers.
Action: Susan will check with DT on their promotion plans.
Our Goal: climbing, food, entertainment, all day venue. Jim commented that the best event was when we had the climbing in the same place as the evening events, Sylvan climbing and using the Auditorium after for the slide show, auction, and food.
Action: Susan will check on the availability of the Auditorium.
Website: Laney cannot be the web administrator or publish the newsletter. Frontpage vs. Adobe Go Live. Rick Emerson works for Golden West (they have our domain). Allan noted that the current list of repaired routes is not updated – Bruce will address. Allan also suggested a message board for the site… he would be willing to monitor it.
Action: Bruce will work on updating the repaired route lits.
Action: Bruce will work with Allan and Gus to get the website functioning and Allan will look into developing a message board.
Route Repair Project in the Far Downs at Sylvan Lake: May 20, 9:00 AM at the SL parking lot. Plan to work 6 hours or so. Contact Bruce if you are interested in helping. We need chain and quicklinks. The Spearfish Canyon Bolt fund got $296 from Spearfish Canyon Guidebook Sales.
Direction of Coalition: Promote and preserve climbing in the Black Hills, raise money for fun events and repair of routes. Suggested by Jim Peterson to promote how many climbers climb here.
